Woodside Cheerleaders takes first in national competition
Prior to their journey down South, the squad had three-hour practices every day for two weeks straight in addition to their obligations to the Woodside Basketball half-time show viewers. All the practice in the world, however, could not prepare them for obstacles about to be thrown their way. The squad was relaxing, while eating their lunches, when their coach hastily informed them that their schedule had been changed.
The squad was to report to the performance area an hour before they had anticipated! Frantic and uniform-less, the squad ran around the theme park in order to arrive at the correct time.
In spite of their prompt arrival, the cheerleaders faced yet another setback. They did not have a chance to see the stage until they were actually performing. Their coaches encouraged them to “just have energy and stay excited the whole time.” Their success in doing so was evident as the audience sung their praises.
“We just kind of went out there with the attitude of having fun,” raves Stuart, “and we pulled through and ended up getting first.” Woodside hasn’t even had the chance to compete in nationals in six years, so the first place win means a lot to the Wildcats.
Stuart hopes that their success in nationals will boost the reputation of the squad and inspire more students to start (or keep) cheering. “I’m just really proud of the team,” she praises. “We did a really good job.”
The boys’ varsity soccer team might be on their way to the CCS
championship. The team is ready for the action with their games
against the tough and mighty Menlo and Terra Nova. If they beat them
then they will qualify for the playoffs. When asked about the season,
Mac Hart replied humbly “Pretty good.” They do not seem to be stressed
about the games in the coming weeks. Instead there is a relaxed
intensity that can be seen in the eyes of the players. The team has not
lost a game in this entire season! Which to the audience in the
surrounding area is an impressive mark. They had tied Carlmont in a big
game, which was a strong opposition but they push through it as if it
meant nothing. It is even more impressive that the team mostly
consisting of seniors and juniors has acquired the two help of two
sophomores, Danny Schulman and Mac Hart. These two have contributed
greatly, Mac doing a great job in the cage and Danny even opening his
head on a play earlier in the season. Without a doubt the guys of the
Woodside soccer team are going to CCS. Nothing can stop these guys from
making this a great season, in fact, they already have.
The
girls are also having a great season. The record of the girls is
11-2-3, which is a great record to be going into CCS with. The big game
for them was against Carlmont in which Caitlyn Brandman scored the only
goal of the game against the Scots to make a dramatic win. The girls
are going to do great in their chance for gold. With 7 seniors and 3
freshmen they make good in this season and will continue to do so in
the playoffs. With seventeen wins, the girls soccer team has set a new
Woodside record.
